The heart of the old center, Marienplatz, is what Munich is famous for: during the run up to the Christmas season, the square will be filled with hundreds of stands offering many kinds of goods such as wooden Christmas decorations, glass baubles, crafts, and food. Don’t forget to mingle with the local people in the square to admire the 30-meter-high lighted Christmas tree, a glorious festive treat!

neuschwansteinDay 3: Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace
After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit and tour the most romantic castle in Germany. Neuschwanstein Castle is located in Bavaria, on a hilltop flanked by magnificent mountains with an approach which offers stunning views of the Hohenschwangau Valley below. The castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, also known as the “Fairytale King” or sometimes referred to as “Crazy Ludwig.” Neuschwanstein’s idyllic design inspired the castles of Walt Disney’s magical theme parks. Today, Neuschwanstein is the most visited castle in Germany and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, attracting over 1,300,000 visitors per year.

Next, take an excursion to Linderhof Palace (Linderhof Schloss), the former residence Maximilian II, the King of Bavaria. The son of Ludwig I, Maximilian was known for bringing a new era of scholars into the kingdom with his passion for history and science. The palace took much of its design inspiration from the palace at Versailles.

Day 7: Vienna
Vienna is the imperial capital of Austria. This beautiful city is filled with history, art, and of course music. Your tour will introduce the most famous and important sites of Vienna as you make your way along the Ringstrasse, a circular road built around the downtown area. This grand boulevard was built on the site of the old fortification wall during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. Along the Ringstrasse, many of Vienna’s most important buildings and architectural monuments can be found, such as the State Opera, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Natural History Museum, Parliament, City Hall, and the Burgtheater (Europe’s second-oldest theater and one of the most important theaters in the German-speaking theatrical world). You can also view the statues of Empress Maria Theresia, Johann Strauss, and other famous Austrian figures.

As most of the inner city streets are too narrow for buses, you will be invited for a walk through the city, including a visit to the Christmas Markets and a glimpse inside the Hofburg (the Imperial Winter Palace). Guests will also receive a voucher to a traditional Vienna coffee house so you can indulge in some delicious cake and coffee any time during the day. The famous traditional café was first opened in 1876, and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for luminaries in the worlds of art, literature, politics, and science, such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg, and Leo Trotzki.

Vienna’s classic Christmas market is located on the square in front of the city’s glorious Town Hall. Wend your way down the market’s little lanes while enjoying the beauty all around you. This well-known Christkindlmarkt provides plenty of opportunity to buy good quality items such as jewelry, candles, and handmade baby cribs, as well as gastronomic delights including maroni, bratwurst, and lebkuchen, as well as belly-warming glühwein and punsch.
